A useful study chat gets you to attempt an answer before showing you one. Start with a small topic and trustworthy course material, then ask for practice at your level. This guide gives you a repeatable session you can use in ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude without needing a special study feature. The examples are templates to adapt, not a promise that every generated question or explanation will be correct.
Choose one learning goal, supply a short piece of course material, and ask the assistant to quiz you one question at a time. Attempt each answer before requesting a hint, check corrections against your source, and save missed concepts for a later review. Measure progress with fresh questions you can answer without the chat.

Choose a goal you can actually test
Replace ‘teach me biology’ with ‘help me distinguish diffusion from osmosis using three unfamiliar examples’. Write your current level and what counts as success. For a language lesson, that could be producing five original past-tense sentences. A narrow target gives the session a stopping point and makes a weak explanation easier to notice.

Give the assistant a small source packet
Paste the relevant notes with a heading, or attach permitted material if your account supports it. Ask for a short outline of the section before the quiz. Correct an omitted topic now. Tell the assistant to identify anything that is not supported by the supplied material rather than silently adding it to your revision list.

Answer the first question without looking
Request one question at a time and keep the answer hidden until you respond. Write your attempt in your own words, even if it is incomplete. Ask for a hint about the next step when stuck. After a correction, explain the idea again using a different example instead of copying the assistant's sentence.

Check the explanation and record the mistake
Compare the correction with your course source or answer key. Label your mistake specifically: confused definition, arithmetic error, missed condition or incomplete explanation. If the assistant contradicts the source, save the disputed passage and ask your teacher or another qualified person. Repeating a confident but wrong explanation will not make it more reliable.

Make a short set of review cards
Create cards only for facts or distinctions you need to retrieve. Give each card one clear question and a brief answer. For example, a card about a scientific process might ask for its direction and one condition. Keep problem-solving practice alongside the cards; recognizing a definition does not show that you can apply it.

Finish with an independent check
Close the previous answers and attempt two new questions, preferably from your course materials. Record what you solved unaided and what still needed help. Put a short review into a later study session. Adjust its timing to your deadline and performance; the example schedule below is a starting point, not a universal memory formula.

A 20-minute session you can repeat
Spend two minutes choosing a goal and checking the source, eight minutes answering questions, five minutes correcting errors, and five minutes on a fresh attempt. If the setup takes longer, shrink the topic rather than extending every session. Keep the timer separate from the chat so you can notice when formatting cards is consuming your practice time.
The University of Minnesota's teaching guidance supports returning to material across spaced sessions and mixing practice topics. That is the learning principle behind revisiting mistakes here. It does not validate a particular chatbot, prompt or exact interval. A useful next-day task is simply to retry yesterday's weakest question without reopening its answer.
When the assistant gives away the answer
Stop the exercise and request a new question of similar difficulty. Say that the solution should appear only after your attempt. If it still reveals everything, use the chat to prepare a question sheet, move the answer key to a separate document, and practise outside the chat. The interface should support your exercise rather than decide how you study.
A generated score is feedback from that conversation, not your predicted exam grade. Keep a simple record of independent attempts instead: date, topic, correct without help, and next issue to review. Improvement on new questions is more informative than repeatedly receiving praise for a familiar answer.
